Among those companies was Lada. A number of components were strengthened to withstand variable road conditions. Of the components best enhanced was the transmission, which is still in production today, on modern machinery to exacting modern standards. Among other applications, this same transmission is installed in the Niva, an SUV which is world-renowned for its reliability and toughness (see YouTube for its domination in head-to-head trials against Land Rovers and Jeeps). The gear ratios are virtually the same as the factory 124 transmission, except for the 5th gear ratio, which is actually better than the Fiat 5th. The ratio is .78:1 vs the Fiat .87:1, which means lower RPM on the freeway. The shift pattern is the same. A subjective evaluation reports that the shifting is slightly crisper and the slightly lower shifter placement is comfortable. First off I am a tech. This took me about 6 1/2 hours to installed and then modify stuff so it would fit. So the trans went right in but the trans mount would not line up. "(NOTE: This is NOT true to most year models) So I had to move to crossmember forward 1 inch. You need to flatten out the flange on the crossmember and flip it around. Then grind out the holes. you then need to loosen the motor mounts and shift the back of the trans over about 1 1/2 inches so the drive shaft center support bearing will clear the tunnel." Then remove the big seal at the output shaft cut 1/2 inch off of the center bushing so the driveline will go all the way on. Do not replace the back up switch. It is too long and locks up the shifter in reverse. the shifter handle is too short. So I made a shaft about 6 inches long to get it to the right height. The trans makes a clicking noise at first then goes away after driving about 5 miles. It grinds into gears and is hard to shift for the first 15
